How to create a ‘Blind’ keyboard

Creating your blind keyboard BEFORE the course enables students to maximise teaching time.

They are remarkably simple to create and it takes 10 minutes at most.

Equipment required

  • A USB keyboard - Ensure this works with the device being used for the course (NOT a tablet)

  • Coloured stickers

  • Velcro sticker

The position of the stickers is particularly important. Please read the full instructions below.

Where to place stickers

  • Eight different fingers are used in typing, so students can select eight different colours, one for each finger.
To avoid making mistakes, we suggest you copy the colours we have used in the illustration below.

A sticker MUST cover every letter but NOT the numbers
Commonly used punctuation should also be covered, as shown below.

correct positioning of the stickers is critical

  • Two coloured bands will be supplied for the index fingers. Most students do not need these bands.
If they do, it is wise to use the same colour bands as stickers on the two middle fingers (green and blue below).

  • Black Velcro stickers go over the coloured stickers on the F and J keys.

They must be in place at the beginning of the course

When complete your keyboard should look something like this
