Why learn to touch type?

Training a child to touch-type requires a significant amount of time, money and effort, but it is an investment I cannot recommend more highly.

Typing is a skill that would help anyone but if a student struggles with literacy, it can significantly improve both attainment and confidence.

dyslexia ASSESSORS recommend students learn to touch type

Despite the fact that almost every dyslexia assessor recommends students learn to touch type and many learn-to-type packages are widely available, alarmingly few students are proficient typists. This stops them from accessing technologies that would dramatically improve their grades.

Why can’t students touch-type?

  • Learning to touch type is hard. It takes a lot of practice, which few students are prepared to do.

  • Few schools or parents appreciate how drastically touch typing can improve attainment levels.

  • Family harmony can be severely damaged by nagging students to practise, so many parents give up.

  • Very few schools know how to teach touch typing. Instead, they sit students in front of devices expecting them to teach themselves. While this is a cheap and easy way to learn, it has very limited success.

Teaching my children to touch type was the single most beneficial skill they learned.
It enabled them to access a wealth or helpful soltuions that improved the grades they achieved throughout the year, increasing their confidence and self esteeem.
It has also had a significant positive impact on their exam results.
