Touch Typing for Academic Success Remote Course

Being able to touch type is helpful for anyone. For dyslexics and others that struggle with literacy it is a VITAL skill.

Almost every dyslexia assessor recommends learning to touch type but few dyslexic teens can do so adequately. This denies them the ability to access technologies that would help them achieve more.

Technology opens a wealth of support to students with poor literacy

touch typing is the key to accessing that technology

How does this course differ from other typing courses?

This course is unique, as it is tailored to the specific needs of dyslexic students.

It differs from others course in its content, delivery and the results achieved.

Content

  • Regarding content, the course teaches

    • touch typing

    • equips students to utilise technology and learning tools that help them improve their grades.

  • Students are often reluctant to do the necesarry practise that learning to type requires.

  • Learning how typing can help students perform better academically gives them the intrinsic motivation required to complete the necessary practise.

delivery

The course is a combination of intensive supervised training AND distance learning.

  • The supervised training

    • has a fixed start and end time when students are taught lessons and learn to type.

    • Each student is sent webcams that captures their keyboard to ensure correct techique

  • Distance learning

    • after completing the face to face classes, students are set work to complete outside lessons to establish muscle memory.

    • students are kept on track with weekly webinars and parental reports.

Results

  • Touch Typing for Academic Success is highly effective in helping students maximise their typing speed and accuracy.

  • On completion every student should be capable of typing their home / course work, enabling them to use learning tools to get higher grades.

Given there is nothing else like it, it is hard to describe in writing.

This video explains how it:

  • Differs from traditional courses

  • Helps students achieve better grades.

BEING ABLE TO TOUCH TYPE CAN SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF WRITTEN WORK, CONFIDENCE & EXAM GRADES

Touch typing course key points.jpg

It is particularly effective because it doesn’t simply teach touch typing, but also opens the doors to the technology and techniques that improve academic attainment

· Few dyslexic teenagers taking formal exams are competent
touch typists

· Students often underachieve because they run out of time.
Touch typing is much quicker than hand writing enabling
students to write more in a finite exam time period.

· Motivating children to practise is hard – learning must be fun!!

Who should attend?

The course is designed for dyslexics, and those that display dyslexic tendencies (struggle with getting ideas down in writing) but any student would benefit from attending.

We aim to teach students to touch type before formal external exam courses commence (i.e. before they start year 10 in the UK).

We can teach older students but would strongly recommend they learn earlier.

Without significant practice the speed and accuracy required to improve grades simply cannot be obtained. When to learn to touch type?

While a child’s dexterity often improves in their teen years, the advantages of learning to touch type in primary school are significant.

Starting secondary school with typing as one’s ‘normal way of working’ should greatly reduce the amount of evidence required to justify being a laptop user in formal exams.

While a students ability improves in teenage years, the motivation to practice significantly decreases with peer pressure and increased school workload playing a part too.

“Teaching my children to touch type was the single most beneficial skill they learned. It enabled them to access a wealth of helpful solutions that improved the grades they achieved throughout the year, increasing their confidence and self esteem. It has also had a significant positive impact on their exam results.

Useful informaiton

Students need to bring their own laptops that can connect to the Internet.

This way we can ensure everything is working correctly so they are set up for success at home. It is essential that children have a means of practising at home.

We can supply loan laptops for a limited number of students in families that do not have a portable device to bring to the intensive supervised training.

Touch typing has been so vital for me during my exams, without my laptop privilege and typing speed I don’t know how I would have achieved the grades I did.
